From November 22nd Christmas atmosphere in the European Capital of Culture
From the 22nd to the 25th of November, Matera will be adorned to celebrate Christmas and to start the countdown for 2019 New Year’s Eve, when Matera will be officially a European Capital. The programme of “Matera, town of Christmas” plans the setting of exhibition areas of handcrafted products, mainly Christmas-themed, with the participation of about one hundred exhibitors from different Italian regions, Christmas street food (wine, chestnuts..) with activities selected by Slow Food district, by Europen Castel of Sant Claus, protected by the Elfs for kid’s entertainment.
The Castle Park, that will host Santa Claus house, streets and squares of the historical center will be scene of the artificial snow show, while the Christmas Street Band will enliven with their sounds the most evocative corners of the town.
Few weeks after, on December 7, will start the awaited appointment with the “Living Nativity”* that, this year too, will characterize Christmas in town until the 6th January. Lastly, the New Year’s Eve will be another very important appointment that will be the forerunner for the opening of the year Capital that will take place on the 19th January 2019.

7, 8, 9 – 15, 16 – 22, 23 – 28, 29, 30 December 2018 – 4, 5, 6 January 2019. The Living Nativity in Sassi di Matera will be arranged in theatrical way, with the participation of actors that will stage several contexts of daily life in Judea two thousand years ago, everything set up in an itinerant path from the Historical Center of Matera to the Sasso Barisano.
